Those affected by natural disasters this spring who have been unable to file their state income tax returns may be able to file as late as Dec. 3. Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders in April extended the deadline to file an income tax return from April 15 to July 31 for citizens across the state.
Due to the ongoing effects of the spring storms, tornadoes and flooding, the IRS has extended the deadline to file federal tax returns even further to Nov. 3. Arkansas state law allows affected taxpayers an additional one-month extension from the federal due date, pushing the deadline for state tax returns to Dec. 3.
According to the Department of Finance & Administration, the relief includes 2024 returns for individuals, S corporations, C corporations, pass-through entities, fiduciaries and estates, partnerships and composite returns.
The DFA states that penalties will not apply to returns filed by Dec. 3, but the due dates for any estimated tax payments have not been extended and must be paid when due to avoid penalties and interest.
Taxpayers utilizing the relief must check the federal extension box on their returns or attach the notice from the IRS granting the federal extension, available here. For more information, call the DFA at 501-682-1100 for individuals or 501-682-4775 for businesses.
