As high school graduates prepare for the next chapter of their lives, many Arkansas families are facing a familiar challenge: how to pay for higher education, career training or trade school programs as costs continue to rise.
State officials are encouraging families to consider the Arkansas Brighter Future 529 Plan, a savings program designed to help Arkansans prepare financially for educational opportunities after high school.
“A post-high school education can transform what is possible for Arkansas families and their future,” said Chris Scott, director of Arkansas 529 Programs. “The Arkansas Brighter Future 529 Plan makes it easier to save with confidence and purpose.”
The cost of higher education remains a concern for students and families nationwide. According to the College Board’s Trends in College Pricing and Student Aid report, tuition and fees for the 2025-2026 academic year increased between 2.7% and 4%, depending on the type of institution. Beyond tuition, expenses such as housing, food, books and supplies continue to drive up the overall cost of education.
While trade schools, technical programs and apprenticeships can provide more affordable alternatives to traditional four-year colleges, rising costs are still affecting families across a variety of post-secondary education options.
Officials say one of the advantages of the Arkansas Brighter Future 529 Plan is its flexibility. Funds can be used for more than just tuition. Qualified expenses may include books, housing, software required for coursework, and even tools and materials needed for trade school programs.
The Brighter Future 529 Plan is administered by the Arkansas Treasurer of State’s Office and serves as a tax-deferred educational savings and investment program. Funds may be used at accredited two- and four-year colleges and universities, trade schools and K-12 private schools across the country.
Parents, grandparents and foster parents can open an account for a child with an initial investment of as little as $25.
For families looking to get a head start on future education expenses, officials say the program offers a way to save gradually while helping reduce the financial burden that often accompanies higher education and career training opportunities.
