The Arkansas250 Commission honored the late U.S. Senator Hattie Caraway with the placement of a historical marker at the V.C. Kays House on the campus of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Caraway was the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate.
The Caraway marker is the No. 5 of 11 being placed across the state, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the establishment of the United States following the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
“I’m excited that the Arkansas250 Commission has chosen to honor Sen. Caraway with a historical marker on campus,” said Adam Long, executive director of Arkansas State University’s Heritage Sites. “Sen. Caraway made an impact on the country, on the state, on Jonesboro and on the university.”
After being appointed to complete her late husband Thaddeus’ term as senator, Hattie Caraway was elected to two terms in 1932 and 1938.
Caraway died in 1950 and is buried in Jonesboro’s Oaklawn Cemetery.
The other 10 markers will be placed honoring Arkansas Post, the Old State House, the Buffalo National River, the Louisiana Purchase, the Crater of Diamonds State Park, Bauxite, the Daisy Bates House in Little Rock, the Quapaw Treaty of 1924, Walmart and Petit Jean State Park.
