J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. is expanding its last mile capabilities through its recent acquisition of a Massachusetts-based company.
On Dec. 31, J.B. Hunt finalized its purchase of RDI Last Mile Co.’s assets. RDI has provided home delivery services of large products in the Northeast United States. Using contract carriers, RDI focuses largely on furniture delivery and reportedly generates $35 million in annual revenue.
According to J.B. Hunt president and CEO John Roberts, the acquisition reflects the company’s priority to expand its delivery network and hone in on key delivery markets. “Growing our final mile delivery capabilities is a priority, and the acquisition of RDI further extends our expertise in furniture delivery,” he said in a statement.
J.B. Hunt’s Final Mile Services is a division of its Dedicated Contract Services unit, which uses two service models to deliver items on the “last mile.” The two models include an “asset-based delivery network and a dedicated non-asset-based solution,” according to the company’s website.
“Providing our customers with a comprehensive, high-quality delivery experience drives our final mile services,” said Nick Hobbs, executive vice president and president of Dedicated Contract Services at J.B. Hunt. “RDI is a reputable furniture delivery provider, and we are excited to welcome them to J.B. Hunt.”
J.B. Hunt has acquired other businesses to bolster its Final Mile Services in recent years. In February 2019, it acquired Cory 1st Home Delivery, a New Jersey home delivery and logistics company. J.B. Hunt acquired Special Logistics Dedicated for $136 million in 2017. The Houston-based company provides pool distribution services throughout North America.
The terms of the RDI deal were not disclosed in a news release.
