The Little Rock-based retailer Dillard’s Inc. is one of the best-performing stocks of the past few years. The family-run department store’s stocks have soared more than 1,500% since April of 2020. Dillard’s market value is on par with Macy’s Inc., despite the fact that Dillard’s has less than a third of Macy’s annual revenue.
Dillard’s has roughly 280 stores across the South, and is one of the few department-store chains still run by its founders, the Dillard family.
Dillard family members visit stores weekly and are as familiar with sales and merchandise as sales representatives and warehouse associates. The Dillard family follows a traditional shopkeeper mentality of hands-on smart merchandising and shrewd management.
Because the Dillard family continues to work alongside employees, staff feel a heightened sense of loyalty and have remained with the company for decades. While many big-name companies have criticized Dillard’s for not modernizing their stance, it’s apparent that they don’t have to in order to see success.
