Weyerhaeuser Company has unveiled plans to invest approximately $500 million in a new TimberStrand manufacturing facility near Monticello and Warren, marking a significant expansion of its engineered wood products (EWP) operations in the U.S. South. The cutting-edge facility, which will have an annual production capacity of roughly 10 million cubic feet, is set to begin construction in 2025, with operations targeted to commence in 2027.
The TimberStrand plant will leverage Weyerhaeuser’s proprietary technology, utilizing southern yellow pine as the primary raw material. With its location near the company’s extensive Arkansas timberlands, the facility will integrate seamlessly with Weyerhaeuser’s timber supply chain, benefiting from access to rail and freight networks. A biomass-fueled cogeneration system will power the facility, supporting the company’s environmental sustainability goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Facility Highlights:
- Increased Capacity: The plant doubles Weyerhaeuser’s North American TimberStrand® production, enhancing its EWP portfolio.
- Economic Impact: Once operational, it is expected to generate $100 million in annual Adjusted EBITDA and create nearly 200 high-quality jobs in Monticello and the surrounding region.
- Sustainability Focus: The cogeneration system will meet the plant’s energy needs, significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
- Strategic Integration: Positioned near Weyerhaeuser’s timberlands and existing manufacturing facilities in Dierks and Emerson, the new facility aligns with the company’s distribution networks and sustainability commitments.
“This is an exciting opportunity to grow our EWP business, expand TimberStrand into the U.S. South and provide an additional outlet for our fiber logs in Arkansas,” President and CEO Devin W. Stockfish said. “Of the wood products we produce, EWP has the strongest tie to single-family housing construction activity, and this new facility aligns with our conviction that U.S. housing demand will remain favorable over the long term. In addition, this plant will allow Weyerhaeuser to better serve other customers and end markets in the region, including mass timber applications, and it supports our broader sustainability ambitions.”
Arkansas Impact
This investment adds to Weyerhaeuser’s significant footprint in Arkansas, which includes 1.2 million acres of timberlands, a seedling nursery and several offices. The company’s existing facilities in Dierks and Emerson, combined with the Monticello addition, underscore its commitment to Arkansas, where it currently employs over 700 people.
“We look forward to building on our long history in the state and providing new employment opportunities in Monticello and surrounding communities,” Stockfish added.
The $500 million capital expenditure will be funded through cash on hand or future financing, as deemed appropriate, and will not factor into the company’s Adjusted Funds Available for Distribution framework.
