The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has been designated the state’s only Center of Excellence for implanting the AMS 700 Inflatable Penile Prosthesis, a long-term treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED).
ED affects more than half of men between ages 40 and 70 and can stem from various physical or psychological causes, impacting self-esteem, relationships and intimacy.
“Being designated as an AMS 700 Center of Excellence confirms that UAMS Urology has a skilled team of experts that provide high-quality care for our ED patients,” said Timothy Langford, M.D., chair of the UAMS College of Medicine Department of Urology.
Boston Scientific, the manufacturer of the AMS 700, recently awarded the designation to the UAMS Urology Center at 10915 N. Rodney Parham Road in Little Rock. The recognition highlights Brian Langford, M.D.’s expertise in performing the procedure.
Having completed hundreds of these outpatient surgeries, Langford said the implant restores function and improves the quality of life for patients. A common cause of ED is prostate cancer treatment, but diabetes and hypertension can also contribute to the condition.
“This designation recognizes the achievement of Center of Excellence program requirements, including experience with implanting the prosthesis and commitment to continuously educating patients and the community about erectile dysfunction and available treatment options,” Boston Scientific stated.
The procedure, which lasts about an hour to an hour and a half, is performed through two small incisions while the patient is sedated. The device, coated with antibiotics, is fully concealed within the body and activated by squeezing and releasing a pump in the scrotum.
Patients typically return four to six weeks after surgery to learn how to use the implant. By then, most are ready to resume sexual activity.
“The AMS 700 is a unique solution that allows patients to be spontaneous again and is reliable with no medication side effects or ongoing costs,” said Langford.
A study evaluating the device found that 95% of patients and 90% of partners reported satisfaction with sexual intercourse, according to Boston Scientific.
