A University of Arkansas at Little Rock professor has received a top award for his nonfiction graphic history book.
UA Little Rock assistant professor Dr. Brian Mitchell was awarded the Phillis Wheatley Book Award for his debut graphic history book, “Monumental: Oscar Dunn and His Radical Fight in Reconstruction Louisiana.” Published earlier in 2021, the book relates the story of Dunn, a man born into slavery who became the first Black lieutenant governor and acting governor in the United States.
Mitchell received the award on May 21 from the Sons oand Daughters of the United States Middle Passage.
“You should be justifiably proud that you have written a fantastic and award-winning book,” Dr. Evelyn McDowell, president of Sons and Daughters of the United States Middle Passage, said in a statement.
