Multiple media outlets are reporting that U.S. Steel plans to build a new plant in Osceola.
The new facility will reportedly be built on the same site as its Big River Steel plant, and is part of the company’s plans to invest $11 billion in domestic operations by 2028.
The new plant will be a direct-reduced iron plant, using iron pellets from a U.S. Steel ore plant in Minnesota to produce iron feedstock for the company’s electric arc furnaces at Big River.
The direct statement that U.S. Steel provided AMP reads as follows:
Our new direct reduced iron (DRI) plant at Big River Steel Works in Arkansas will propel our Mini Mill segment toward industry leadership in advanced, sustainable steel production. Using DR-grade pellets from our Minnesota Ore facility, the plant will produce important DRI feedstock for our electric arc furnaces, bolstering our raw materials edge and strengthening a dependable domestic supply chain. This investment highlights our partnership with Nippon Steel as we collaborate to execute impactful projects. More detailed information will be shared as the project progresses.
AMP will update this story.
