For Summer Dacus, president of sales and agent at McGhee Insurance Agency in North Little Rock, there was a time when she never would have envisioned herself selling insurance.
Fortunately, the self-described outdoor adventure enthusiast was ready to roll when life threw her a curve ball and delivered a career in insurance.
“I think I can vouch for a lot of agents when I say I did not choose insurance; insurance chose me,” she said. “I actually had my personal insurance business with McGhee Insurance for about a year. One day, I came in the office to pay my bill, and my boss now — but who was my agent then — asked me if I would like a job.”
Dacus was working “crazy” hours at Walmart at the time, so the set schedule appealed to her.
“I happily accepted the opportunity that turned into a beloved career for me, and I could not imagine myself anywhere else,” she said. “I have developed a love for insurance and all the things I have learned in this industry and for the people I have met throughout my career who have helped me grow so much.”
The Lonoke native is going on 16 years at McGhee, which was launched in 1999 and now has offices in North Little Rock, Hot Springs and Fayetteville. A true insurance veteran after answering when opportunity knocked almost two decades ago, Dacus said she can appreciate what sets McGhee apart in the market — and customer service leads the way.
“It’s personal service, 100 percent,” she said. “As local, small-town agents with tons of heart, we care. Being an independent agent allows me many opportunities to help people with their insurance needs, whether it’s building a policy to meet every aspect of clients’ needs, working on finding discounts and savings to help lower premium to sharing my knowledge as an insurance agent.”
Dacus specializes in personal lines of insurance protection, specifically home insurance, as well as auto insurance, umbrella insurance, boat and life insurance.
Gaining clients’ trust and succeeding in the insurance industry requires people skills, for one, and Dacus brings them in spades. She said she looks forward to going to work and helping clients and prospective clients with their insurance needs and greeting them with “the biggest smile you can receive.”
“The best part of my job is not only the people I work with but also my clients, with whom I have built relationships where we can talk about the kids, the new and the old, crack jokes and just feel like part of a large family,” she said. “I may get the side-eye when I say this, but I have not had any challenges. I love what I do and love sharing that passion, and there has not been a challenge that didn’t have a solution.”
