Arkansas Senator Gary Stubblefield has died at age 74, according to multiple media outlets.
Sen. Stubblefield, who initially served two years in the state’s House of Representatives, was elected to the Senate in 2012 for District 26 — parts of Franklin, Johnson, Logan and Sebastian counties.
While the cause of death has not yet been revealed, his daughter shared on social media on Aug. 26 that he was undergoing several surgeries in a hospital. According to the post, he was in “very critical” condition.
Throughout his political career, Stubblefield prioritized sponsoring legislation on pro-life issues, advocating for Second Amendment rights, lowering taxes and reducing government regulation, and supporting farmers and livestock growers (including legislation expanding agricultural schools).
Before his career in politics, Stubblefield worked as a dairy farmer in Branch. He later attended the University of Arkansas and was on the Razorbacks football team.
