AgriCapture recently revealed the sale of 30,000 high-integrity methane emission reduction credits as part of the largest rice methane reduction project in U.S. history. The credits provide financial incentives for rice farmers adopting irrigation management techniques that significantly lower methane emissions while conserving water.
“It’s rewarding to work with AgriCapture and participate in a program that has financially strengthened our family farm, all while enhancing our environmental stewardship,” said Franklin Fogleman, an Arkansas rice farmer.
Farmers across Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri and Texas took part in the initiative, employing practices like alternate wetting and drying or furrow irrigation. These methods reduce methane emissions by up to 60% compared to conventional production methods while saving over 9 billion gallons of water.
The project allows AgriCapture to connect farmers with environmental markets and help companies offset emissions, reduce water use, and support sustainable U.S. agriculture.
“AgriCapture makes it possible for us to turn our sustainable practices into revenue by simplifying the process of selling carbon credits. It’s a win for both our farm and the environment,” said Arkansas rice farmer Michael McCarty.
AgriCapture plans to expand acreage in 2025 and beyond, bringing more nature-based carbon credits to market and showcasing agriculture as a climate solution.
“Carbon credits help us adopt sustainable practices that require higher investment, and this project allows us to do so in a way that works for our operation,” said Gavin Sullivan, another Arkansas farmer. “The sale of these credits provides an economic return for being better stewards of our rice farm.”
Traditional rice farming emits methane, a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential approximately 81 times greater than carbon dioxide over 20 years. With methane accounting for a third of global warming, addressing emissions from rice production is critical to mitigating climate change.
AgriCapture’s credits were generated through detailed field data collection, quantification of environmental benefits, and emissions reporting. They are third-party verified and issued by the Climate Action Reserve.
“Our goal at AgriCapture is to lead the way in creating scalable, market-based solutions that help farmers improve the environmental and economic sustainability of their operation,” said AgriCapture President Tyler Hull. “We’re seeing increased demand from buyers as we demonstrate the high return on investment and outsized impact associated with methane reduction.”
