As the federal government shutdown nears its end, the financial strain on hundreds of dedicated public servants continues to weigh heavily, especially for those who have kept Arkansas’s skies safe throughout the crisis. At Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, roughly 140 federal employees with the FAA Air Traffic Control and TSA have worked without pay for weeks, ensuring flights operate safely and efficiently despite mounting personal hardship.
Many of these essential workers earn just over $43,000 a year to cover the rising costs of living, childcare and gas. With paychecks halted, the burden has quickly become overwhelming. Some have struggled to afford groceries and basic household needs.
In true Arkansas fashion, the community has risen to the occasion. Local organizations, including the Arkansas Foodbank and Well Fed, have provided meals, groceries and gas cards to affected employees. Still, the need continues to grow by the day.
To coordinate relief efforts, City Director Capi Peck and Shane Carter, director of public affairs at the airport, are working together to ensure ongoing support for these workers and their families. In partnership with Heather Larkin and the Arkansas Community Foundation, a dedicated account—the Federal Employees Emergency Fund—has been established to provide direct aid.
Every dollar donated to this fund goes directly to those most in need, helping to cover essentials such as groceries, gas, prescriptions and household items. The fund will help fill critical gaps that cannot be met through other programs, particularly during the lapse of the SNAP program. If contributions are strong enough, organizers also hope to provide Thanksgiving meals for affected employees and their families.
Even after the government officially reopens, employees face a long road to financial recovery. Many remember the 2019 shutdown, when it took over six months to catch up on bills accumulated during the 35-day closure. This time, the financial aftershocks will be hitting just as the holiday season approaches.
Residents and local businesses are encouraged to give what they can. Corporate donations and individual contributions can be made securely through the Arkansas Community Foundation at www.arcf.org/lrfederal.
Whether it’s a small personal donation or a larger corporate contribution, every bit of support makes a difference. Together, Arkansans can ensure the men and women who keep our airports running don’t have to worry about how to feed their families or fill their gas tanks, especially after serving through one of the most challenging times of their careers.
