How did you get started in your field?
I have always been drawn to science, and medicine was the natural pathway, given my penchant for problem solving. I didn’t take the traditional route — choosing to go into the U.S. Navy and work in biomedical research first — but it allowed me to make my ultimate career decision more informed. From there, pediatrics was an easy choice. I tell my students that the beauty of pediatrics is that you have to use all your deductive skills to figure out what’s wrong in a patient who cannot usually tell you all the answers. There is never a dull moment.
Which of your accomplishments are you most proud of?
Becoming a small-business owner has been a dream come true. Earlier this year, the clinic was chosen as the 2022 Small Business of the Year by the Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce. The clinic was also chosen as one of only a handful in the state to pilot an early-intervention program, HealthySteps, that is now slated to become a statewide initiative. I’ve helped develop clinical pathways for other providers in the state through my work with the Arkansas Children’s Care Network, which is the nation’s first statewide pediatric clinically integrated network. All of this wouldn’t be possible if I hadn’t been given the opportunity to use my skills outside of just seeing patients.
What are you watching right now?
My husband and I have been watching Welcome to Wrexham about a Welsh soccer club trying to get promoted to a higher tier. It’s incredibly inspiring and funny.
