One classic grill manufacturer is cooking up a new product line. Little Rock-based PK Grills is introducing a new portable grill to the market.
Known for its cast aluminum PK Grill and Smoker, the company has unveiled the PKGO, which is designed specifically for mobile use. PK Grills is marketing two versions of the portable grill: the PKGO Hibachi and the PKGO with Flipkit.
Both grills feature the company’s cast aluminum design. However, the PKGO has a cutting board that doubles as its cover and a 200-square-inch cooking surface. The PKGO with Flipkit has a full aluminum grill capsule that allows users to flip the cast aluminum lid and use it as a cooking cover, doubling the cooking surface to 400-square-inches.
PK Grills’ new grill designs pay homage to the company’s roots while innovating its products. Hilton Meigs of Tyler, Texas created a cast aluminum grill, dubbing it the Portable Kitchen. Meigs continued to manufacture and sell the grills around the southern United States until the company was bought by Lewis Hamlin, who moved the company to Little Rock.
In the ensuring decades, PK Grills became a trusted name among grill users but manufacturing had ceased by the 1970s. Paul James, a Little Rock attorney, discovered one of the PK Grills and acquired the rights to the Portable Kitchen name and original castings, creating the modern-day PK Grills company.
The new grills focus on the “portable” aspect of the PK Grills name, bringing new technology to achieve this goal. In the PKGO with Flipkit, the grill’s lid is attached to the base with a Dura-hing design that allows for direct and indirect two-zone cooking.
“While all of our grills are designed to allow some degree of portability, our new PKGO was designed with travel as the primary use case. Most competing portable grills available in the market tend to sacrifice cooking performance for portability, so PK customers will be amazed that this new smaller, lighter PKGO has the same exceptional cooking characteristics of its larger siblings,” PK Grills president and CEO Brian Taylor said in a statement.
The new grills are available online at PK Grill’s website and at Ace Hardware stores and other select retailers.
