A new map has been developed and released that shows the distribution of broadband providers throughout the State of Arkansas.
Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced the release of the Arkansas State Broadband Map on Wednesday, Jan. 13. In addition to showing the locations of broadband providers, the map is expected to help state officials and agencies develop policy related to broadband in Arkansas.
“This project puts Arkansas on the cutting edge of broadband mapping nationally,” Hutchinson said in a statement. “Broadband delivery is a top priority, and long before the pandemic, I asked state agencies to accelerate the closing of the digital divide between our cities and less-populated rural communities. Our diligence and proactive efforts put us in position to utilize federal funds we have received during the pandemic to enhance our broadband system. Our map identifies broadband sources by structure, a level of detail that allows users to find exactly where broadband is available.”
The state partnered with CostQuest Associates to identify broadband distribution and coverage areas in Arkansas. Hutchinson utilized funds from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund for this consulting effort.
The project is a collaboration between the State Broadband Office, the Arkansas Department of Commerce and the Department of Education.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, state officials have made a push to increase broadband in Arkansas. The major project was the Arkansas Rural Connect Program, which provided grants to increase rural communities’ broadband access.
