John Daly II delivered a thrilling finish at the Columbia Spring Invitational, carding four birdies and an eagle in his final five holes to claim his first collegiate victory. The Arkansas Razorbacks placed five golfers in the top 20, earning a runner-up team finish in the one-day, 36-hole tournament at Rolling Green Golf Club.
Daly shot rounds of 70 and 69 for a 1-under 139 total, tying with Mathew Lin (Yale) and Tyler Brand (Dartmouth). He was declared champion via a scorecard playoff. His morning round featured an even-par 70, including an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole. In the afternoon, Daly overcame a rough stretch that left him five over par by surging back with birdies on holes 16, 18, 1, and 2, along with an eagle on 17.
Mark Stockdale finished just one shot behind Daly, placing fourth with rounds of 71-69 (140). He opened his second round with a birdie before dropping a shot on the par-3 sixth hole. An eagle on the seventh helped him maintain momentum, as he strung together 13 consecutive pars before closing with a bogey.
Teammates Erich Fortlage and Thomas Curry each posted scores of 74-72 (146) to tie for 10th, both recording an eagle in the first round—Fortlage on the par-5 seventh and Curry holing out on the par-4 18th. Gerardo Gomez tied for 20th at 148 after rebounding from an opening-round 76 with an afternoon 72.
Yale, the first-round leader, maintained its edge down the stretch as its top four players combined to go 8-under over their final 16 holes. The Bulldogs shot rounds of 286-281 (567) to finish at 7-over par. Arkansas followed with scores of 289-282 (571), while Dartmouth took third at 574 and host Columbia placed fourth at 589.
The Razorbacks will close out the regular season at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial in Virginia on April 14-15 before competing in the SEC Championship from April 23-27.
