About a year ago, the Arkansas Research and Education Optical Network achieved an important technical milestone: 400-gigabit network capacity.
In practical terms, that means our member institutions can transmit up to 400 gigabits of data per second across Arkansas’ research and education fiber backbone, roughly 400 times the speed of a standard business internet connection, an extraordinarily high level of speed and capacity typically associated with advanced national research, healthcare and supercomputing networks. That capability has implications well beyond the institutions directly connected to it. For perspective, many home internet connections operate at about 1 gigabit per second.
Naturally, increased capability delivers immediate value to the colleges, universities and healthcare organizations connected to the ARE-ON network, but the more important question is this: What does it mean for Arkansas as a whole? The answer is significant. Building a statewide high-capacity fiber network required years of planning, strategic investment and collaboration.
Arkansans should expect that investment to produce measurable returns — economically, academically, medically and technologically. The reason those returns are achievable is that data infrastructure has become as foundational to economic life as the physical infrastructure that came before it.
We are entering an era in which the exchange of data is as critical to prosperity as highways, railroads and electrical grids once were. High-capacity networks now support everything from genomic sequencing and advanced medical imaging to artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing and large-scale scientific research. Increasingly, AI and data-intensive computing are becoming the digital infrastructure behind many of Arkansas’ most important and emerging industries, including agriculture, logistics, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, nanotechnology and energy innovation. While many states are still racing to modernize their digital infrastructure, Arkansas has already established a strong foundation. In this respect, our state is positioned ahead of many competitors.
Through ARE-ON, Arkansas institutions now possess connectivity capable of supporting cloud and supercomputing workloads at near national-laboratory scale. That capability matters because it strengthens our universities’ ability to compete for federal research grants, national laboratory partnerships, advanced cyberinfrastructure initiatives and AI-driven scientific projects.
This advancement also sends a broader message: Arkansas intends to compete in the innovation economy. The institutions making that case are already at work. The state’s growing role in lithium production, advanced manufacturing and AI-ready hyperscale data centers demonstrates that our ambition is already moving from vision to reality.
We are already seeing institutions set increasingly ambitious goals: The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is working to achieve an R2 Carnegie research designation, Arkansas State University in Jonesboro is pursuing R1 status, and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville recently eclipsed $253 million in annual research expenditures.
Achieving those milestones requires more than talented faculty and modern laboratories. It requires the ability to move massive scientific datasets securely and efficiently, collaborate with national research partners in real time, and support cutting-edge computational workloads. In today’s environment, world-class research depends upon world-class digital infrastructure.
The broader benefit for Arkansans is already taking shape. Arkansas is positioned to become a national leader in medical research and education, precision agriculture, and advanced manufacturing not as an abstract aspiration but as a direction our institutions are actively moving toward.

Investments in infrastructure rarely make headlines, but they quietly shape the future prosperity of states and nations. Expanding Arkansas’ information highway is one of those investments.
Earlier this year, Arkansas Northeastern College in Blytheville joined the ARE-ON network, completing a long-standing goal of connecting every public institution of higher education in Arkansas. That shared infrastructure is the connective tissue of Arkansas’ innovation economy. Arkansas institutions are not competing in isolation. They are connected, and that connection is the foundation on which the state’s future will be built.
The network we have built is more than fiber and equipment.
