Entergy Arkansas has put its Chicot Solar Energy Center online, providing 100 megawatts of peak capacity energy to customers. It went online on Sept. 30.
The facility, located near Lake Village in south Arkansas, is expected to provide power for 18,000 homes. Sitting on 825 acres, the solar array features 350,000 solar panels.
“We are proud to be the largest provider of solar energy in the state, as utility-scale solar projects like Chicot Solar allow all of our customers to have access to clean, renewable power at the lowest reasonable costs,” Entergy Arkansas president and CEO Laura Landreaux said in a statement. “We continue to examine new technologies and projects to bring customers new, innovative solutions to meet their energy needs while creating value for everyone.”
The Chicot Solar Center is one of four solar facilities Entergy Arkansas has constructed or planned for Arkansas. The other three include the Stuttgart Solar Energy Center, the Searcy Solar Energy Center and the Walnut Bend Solar Energy Center.
Currently, the Stuttgart and Chicot Solar Energy Centers are the only projects that have gone online. Searcy Solar is slated to go online in late 2021 and Walnut Bend Solar was only recently announced.
Collectively, the company expects the four solar facilities to generate 381 megawatts of electricity with $200 million in savings over 20 years.
