Heartland Forward is expanding its focus on artificial intelligence with the appointment of its first-ever AI Fellow. John Bailey, a nationally recognized expert in technology and public policy, will help guide the organization’s efforts to position the heartland as a leader in AI-driven economic growth.
In the role, Bailey will support Heartland Forward’s AI Caucus and contribute to research, policy discussions and strategic initiatives aimed at helping communities across the region adapt to rapidly evolving technology. His work will focus on how AI can strengthen economic competitiveness while ensuring responsible development and use.
“AI is quickly reshaping industries, jobs, and economies—and the heartland is well positioned to lead what comes next,” said Angie Cooper, president of Heartland Forward. “We have the talent, the ideas, and the momentum to seize this opportunity. John brings the experience to turn that potential into real results and ensure AI delivers for our states and communities.”
Bailey will also help shape the organization’s research agenda and provide insight into emerging state and federal AI policies, working with leaders across the heartland to develop practical strategies for growth and innovation.
“AI represents one of the most significant opportunities for economic growth and innovation in the heartland, and decisions about how to move forward should be shaped by the residents and communities it will impact most,” said John Bailey. “The question is not whether the heartland participates, but whether it leads. That will depend on the choices policymakers and local leaders make now – how they build talent, adopt these tools, and create the conditions for innovation.”
With a background spanning government, philanthropy, and the private sector, including roles at the White House and U.S. Department of Commerce, Bailey brings a broad perspective to the position as Heartland Forward continues to expand its work in emerging technologies.
