Arkansas native Gus Malzahn announced his retirement from coaching on Monday.
Malzahn is the legendary Arkansas high school football coach who went on to coach with the Razorbacks and serve as the head coach at Arkansas State, Auburn and UCF. His coaching career spanned more than 35 years.
Malzahn, 60, went 105-62 in his head coaching career with only two losing seasons. Malzahn went 63-35 from 2013 to 2020 at Auburn, including a national championship game appearance in 2013 against Florida State and two SEC West Division titles. He was the SEC and national coach of the year in 2013 and is generally credited with introducing the trend toward hurry-up, no-huddle offenses. Malzahn most recently served as offensive coordinator at Florida State.
After what became a controversial stint as Arkansas offensive coordinator under Houston Nutt, Malzahn moved up the ranks, eventually getting the head coaching job for a season in Jonesboro before taking over on the Plains. A divisive figure among Hog Nation, Malzahn was rumored to be a candidate in every Arkansas coaching search throughout the 2010s.
A Fort Smith native, Malzahn was a receiver and punter for Division II Henderson State in Arkadelphia as a college player. Prior to joining the Reddies, he walked on at Arkansas and played for Ouachita Baptist.
