Gearhead Outfitters Acquires Two Out-of-State Retail Companies

Outdoors retailer Gearhead Outfitters has acquired two out-of-state companies.

The Jonesboro-based company announced on Thursday, Aug. 15 its acquisition of Rock/Creek Outfitters and Uncle Dan’s Outdoor Store. Rock/Creek Outfitters is based in Tennessee, while Uncle Dan’s Outdoor Store is based in Illinois.

“We are passionate about brick and mortar retail, the outdoor industry, our communities and our mission,” Ted Herget, owner and founder of Gearhead Outfitters, said in a statement. “The opportunity to acquire Rock/Creek and Uncle Dan’s has provided a unique opportunity for all three brands to align under those values as a family of outdoor specialty retailers. Our highest priority is to maintain the integrity of these companies, the brands we carry, and to expand the influence of the outdoor industry.”

Currently, Gearhead Outfitters operates 10 brick-and-mortar locations throughout the Mid-South. Gearhead has two locations in both Jonesboro and Little Rock, as well as stores in Bentonville, Fayetteville, Rogers, Shreveport, La., Springfield, Mo., and Tulsa, Okla.

With the acquisition, Gearhead will gain seven Rock/Creek location in Tennessee and six Uncle Dan’s locations in Illinois and Wisconsin, in addition to the companies’ e-commerce divisions.

The Rock/Creek stores are located at the following Tennessee cities/towns: Chattanooga (4), Cleveland, Benton and Franklin. Rock/Creek also lists a location in Atlanta on its website.

The six Uncle Dan’s location are primarily in the Chicago area: Bannockburn, Evanston, Highland Park, Lakeview and Lincoln Square, as well as one Wisconsin location in Glendale, Wisc.

Both Uncle Dan’s and Rock/Creek have been associated since 2018. According to reports, Uncle Dan’s purchased Rock/Creek in April 2018.

Founded in 1997, Gearhead started life in the living room of one of Herget’s friends but quickly moved to a 700 square foot store. Herget moved Gearhead to downtown Jonesboro, where it is still headquartered, in 2002. The company opened its second location, also in Jonesboro in 2006.

Since that time, Gearhead has opened its Little Rock, Rogers, Bentonville and Fayetteville locations. Starting in 2012, the company began expanding outside of Arkansas, starting with Shreveport and continuing with Springfield, Mo. And Tulsa, Okla. In 2016 and 2018, respectively.
