Some museum exhibits seem to come and go quickly, but an upcoming exhibit at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA) gives speed a whole new meaning. “Beyond the F1 Circuit: Artistry and Speed with Williams Racing” will run at the museum Sept. 5-22.
Presented by Stephens, the exhibit will highlight the overlap of form and function, studying the high-performance auto designs of one of Formula 1’s most notable teams. There will be an exact replica of a Williams Racing car and a driver race suit and helmet, according to a press release by the museum, bringing “the art of motorsport to AMFA for the first exhibition of its kind in the region.”
“’Beyond the F1 Circuit: Artistry and Speed with Williams Racing’ reflects our global view of art and its meaning in all forms. This is an extraordinary opportunity for the public and racing fans to experience the intersection of art and auto. It is an innovative way to think about the world of design as it applies not just to fine art but to objects that range from the mundane to the magnificent,” Dr. Victoria Ramirez, AMFA executive director, said.
Along with the car and uniform, an exclusive film produced for the exhibit will show the collaboration between AMFA, Williams Racing and Stephens. The film depicts the process and considerations for the team’s livery design or racing uniform, as well as the effort it took to install the half-ton car in the museum’s atrium.
“This showcase of Williams Racing is a celebration of the thought and creativity from concept to construction required to compete at this level,” said Warren Stephens, chairman, president and CEO of Stephens.
Much like NFL players’ pads and soccer players’ jerseys, the performance of Williams Racing cars is crucial to winning races. Its visual identity—shapes, lines, colors, graphics, logos—is also essential to its relationship with the team’s fans. This combination of artistry and machinery fuels the team’s success on and off the track, connecting with more than 1.5 billion fans around the world, of which 28 percent are based in the U.S.
“Williams Racing is always looking for ways to innovate with our partners and bring fans closer to Formula 1, and this exhibition is the perfect example of that,” said James Bower, commercial director at Williams Racing. “Iconic liveries are true works of art displayed on a canvas of advanced engineering, and we are delighted to be bringing an exclusive insight into the artistry to Little Rock.”
The ultimate racing machine, a Formula 1 car, fuses performance with aesthetics. With stiff competition and strict regulations of the sport’s authoritative bodies, the car’s 20,000 components are designed with precision to enhance speed, efficiency and aerodynamics. “Beyond the F1 Circuit: Artistry and Speed with Williams Racing” offers a unique look into the craftsmanship behind a Formula 1 race car.
The long tradition of creative problem-solving undergone by artists is reflected in their work in advanced racing circuits, addressing both aesthetic and practical concerns to stand the best chance at winning in high-octane situations. “Beyond the F1 Circuit: Artistry and Speed with Williams Racing” shows that, like many other disciplines, the medium of the Formula 1 car falls somewhere between art and craft, serving a function where it cannot fail without sacrificing beauty and elegance.
