South Arkansas Educational Cooperative, School District Go Solar

Two South Arkansas educational institutions are partnering with Today’s Power Inc. to develop and install solar arrays for their respective campuses. South Central Service Cooperative (SCSC) and Bearden School District are working with TPI, wholly owned subsidiary of Arkansas Electric Cooperatives Inc., as they adopt solar energy.

SCSC is installing a 100 kW fixed-tilt solar array near its Camden headquarters, while the Bearden School District is installing a 400 kW solar facility.

Arkansas Federal Finalizes Merger with Arkansas Democrat-Gazette FCU

Arkansas Federal Credit Union has completed its merger with Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Federal Credit Union. Regulators have approved the merger, with members of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Federal Credit Union voting in favor on Dec. 10, 2019.

On October 23, 2019, the boards of both credit unions announced an agreement to merge.

Rajendran Makes Bid for State House Seat

Political newcomer Mazhil Rajendran is up for the challenge.

Rajendran, a first generation Indian-American, recently announced he was running as a Democrat for State House District 31, that covers portions of Pulaski and Saline counties and includes west Little Rock.

UAMS Invests Mendiratta with Dillard Distinguished Chair in Geriatrics

A University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) geriatrician has been named to the Alexa L. & William T. Dillard Distinguished Chair in Geriatrics. Priya Mendiratta, who serves as a geriatrician and director for the geriatric clerkship and course at UAMS, was invested in the chair on Jan. 16.

Mendiratta has served in various roles at UAMS since joining as a geriatric fellow in 2005. Currently an associate professor at UAMS College of Medicine, she is slated to be elevated to a full professorship in July.

Landers Award Has Competitive Field in 2020

Since its inception in 2000, the Landers Award has become Arkansas’ premier high school football honor. Longtime KATV sports director Steve Sullivan orchestrates the event that includes a dinner for 10 finalists and their coaches and families and a 30-minute live show to announce the winner.

For more than 10 of those years, I have served as one of the voters. The list has grown to include nearly 30 media types who follow high school football.
