Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton refused on Tuesday to comply with a congressional subpoena to testify before a House committee investigating Jeffrey Epstein.
The Clintons penned a letter to James Comer, GOP chairman of the House Oversight Committee, which they posted on social media. In it, they called the House Oversight probe illegal. Meanwhile, Republicans prepared contempt of Congress proceedings against them, the AP reported.
“We will forcefully defend ourselves,” wrote the Clintons, who went on to accuse Comer of allowing other former officials to provide written statements about Epstein to the committee while selectively enforcing subpoenas against them.
“You claim your subpoenas are inviolate when they are used against us yet were silent when the sitting President took the same position, as a former president, barely more than three years ago,” the letter continues. They also criticized him for not subpoenaing Attorney General Pam Bondi for not releasing the full Epstein files, as she was compelled to by Congress.
Comer said he’ll begin contempt proceedings next week.
“No one’s accusing the Clintons of any wrongdoing. We just have questions,” Comer told reporters after Bill Clinton did not show up for a scheduled deposition at House offices on Tuesday.
The Clintons have not been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein, who was arrested in 2019 on federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges, but had a well-documented friendship with the wealthy financier, as did many other prominent D.C. officials, including President Donald Trump. Epstein allegedly killed himself in a New York jail cell awaiting trial.
