Chris Jones is having a good day.
It is a Tuesday afternoon, and the Democratic congressional candidate just touched down at his Markham Street campaign office in Little Rock. Just prior to his arrival, campaign staffers and volunteers were scurrying about, doing all the things that come with an election that just became more interesting than many had predicted.
Jones himself is making the rounds, asking questions, thanking staffers and even posing with one for a selfie. He has the rapid, long strides of an achiever who long ago made peace with being busy. Like any skilled politician, he has a knack for making whoever is in his sights feel important, locking in to whoever is in front of him with unbreaking eye contact.
There is reason for enthusiasm. A month prior, a poll conducted by political consulting firm 2040 Strategy Group put Jones three points ahead of Republican District 2 incumbent Rep. French Hill. Then, in June, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation and 2020 presidential primary candidate Pete Buttigieg flew out to Little Rock to personally endorse Jones, praising his straightforward platform.
“At a time when politics can feel like it’s punching you in the face, Chris is focused on a better future where entrepreneurs thrive, young people can find good-paying jobs and politicians are held accountable,” Buttigieg said at the rally.
Buttigeig, to be sure, swings a big bat for the Democratic party, and it is unlikely that a politician of his caliber would hop on a plane for just any congressional candidate. Jones, though, has been here before. His 2022 gubernatorial campaign ended with Republican candidate and current Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders taking home 63 percent of the vote, but his hard-charging approach gained national attention.
Still — will it be enough? Hill himself is no delicate flower. He has served in Congress since 2015 and recently completed his first year as chair of the House Financial Services Committee. He carries with him a substantial war chest and the full backing of President Donald Trump, given his 90 percent-plus record of voting with the president. To win, Jones must find a way to unlock District 2’s Democratic past.
Jones on the campaign trail this summer.
The district, made up of eight central Arkansas counties, got a Democratic bump in the past thanks primarily to the city of Little Rock, as well as Conway. Between Ray Thornton and Vic Snyder, a Democrat held the District 2 congressional seat from 1991 to 2011, but with the arrival of Trump and his galvanization of the Republican base, bits and pieces of Democratic hope have been hard to come by.
Jones’ solution has been twofold. He has staked his campaign to a simple three-pronged platform, one that pushes bipartisan solutions for cost of living, government accountability and job growth.
“We have been hyperfocused from the beginning on engaging communities all across the district on affordability and accountability,” Jones said. “How do we make life more affordable for Arkansans?”
The second aspect of Jones’ push will be familiar to anyone who followed his gubernatorial campaign, a run that included constant challenges to Sanders’ platform and background. His refusal to back down to the future governor briefly rallied a Democratic base that had become used to big losses, and his approach with Hill has been equally sharp.
“French Hill has had 10 years to deliver for the district, and he hasn’t done it,” Jones said.
Jones has been direct on the subject of Hill, who he characterizes as a Washington fixture who has lost touch with his constituency. He points out Hill’s 2025 vote to repeal a Biden administration law that capped bank overdraft fees and another 2025 vote for Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which reduced federal Medicaid funding.
Those are not partisan issues, Jones said.
“We’re at risk of losing a lot of rural hospitals because of cuts to Medicaid,” Jones said, “so when French Hill voted to cut Medicaid, that caused insurance premiums to go through the roof.”
That is where Jones stands to win or lose come November. To be sure, part and parcel of his task is to rally a Democratic base that has gotten all too used to losing at the polls, but even if Jones sparks the same intense support from Democrats that he enjoyed while running for governor, he almost certainly still needs to pry as many votes away from the GOP as he possibly can.
Jones is betting that his focus on improving quality of life will resonate with Republicans who may feel that long-promised improvements under the Trump administration have yet to arrive. While easier said than done, Jones invites voters to ignore party affiliation and personally examine whether their lives have improved. It is the same across-the-aisle populism that has worked before for Democrats in central Arkansas, and Jones believes it can work once more if framed as both an economic issue and also a public health issue.
“Affordability is big, and so is accountability,” Jones said. “We launched the campaign hitting all eight counties, and what we heard consistently was life is too expensive, and it’s stressful. If it’s expensive and you don’t have the money to do it, it leads to stress, which leads to health outcomes that are horrible. We have farmers that are going bankrupt at rates we’ve never seen before and that are committing suicide at rates we’ve never seen before.”
Jones is also planting a flag for education, an issue so thorny and complicated that many politicians on both sides of the fence prefer to dance around it if at all possible. For Jones, whose mother just celebrated her 48th year of teaching, ignoring the issue is not an option.
Public education in Arkansas needs more attention, Jones said, calling the gap in resources among the state’s public school districts untenable. It is not a push for more governmental regulation of schools, he added, but there should be a bare minimum afforded to all districts.
“There are a lot of folks who live in places that I’m from and who look like me who, through no fault of their own, are in circumstances where the school sucks,” Jones said, “and they just don’t have an opportunity to advance. That shouldn’t happen in this country, and we can fix that. I think it should be up to the school and the community, but there should be a floor, and right now, we don’t have a floor.”
Jones, by his own admission, walks a very particular line. On one hand, he can be an effective firebrand — he goes after Hill with the same directness he offered up for Sanders, a battle-ready approach embraced by Democratic voters feeling underrepresented — but Jones cannot shed his personal background lightly. The concept of respect for all was drilled into him from both his parents, and his brother, Leon, unsuccessfully ran for the Republican nomination for Arkansas attorney general in 2022.
All that is to say that Jones can get along with the best of them. His wager is that equally open-minded Arkansans from opposing parties can have an honest conversation about the lives they are leading and what they need to make it better.
“At the end of the day, if the issue is the issue, then let’s be on the right side of that issue,” Jones said. “We’re in a situation right now. Now maybe if we get out of this hole where our debt is so high and education’s poor, maybe once we get out of that hole, we can fight over party [affiliation], but right now, we’re in an emergency situation.
Party affiliation does not matter.”
