The Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) has announced the appointment of Dr. Yolangel Hernandez Suarez as the executive vice dean, effective October 2024. Hernandez Suarez will oversee the clinical and educational training programs and learning environments at the institution.
Dr. Sharmila Makhija, founding dean and CEO of AWSOM, welcomed the new addition to the leadership team, stating, “Her track record of building high-performing teams in medical education, university settings, and hospital environments provides vital expertise to ensure the School takes significant steps in reaching its strategic goals.”

A graduate of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with an MBA from the University of Miami, Hernandez Suarez aims to cultivate future leaders in medicine at AWSOM.
“We have the chance to graduate influencer physicians from AWSOM who will change how health care is delivered, paid for, and managed,” she said.
Her career also includes roles as a hospital administrator at Jackson Health System in Miami and as the Founding Chief Medical Officer of Humana’s Care Delivery Organization, where her team provided care to over 100,000 seniors across three states.
