The Arkansas State Archives has been awarded a grant of $208,128 from the National Endowment of the Humanities to create an online record of Arkansas newspapers.
The grant, which comes from the National Digital Newspaper Program, will help the State Archives digitize and organize 100,000 pages from Arkansas newspapers that are in its collection, according to a Facebook post. The digitized pages will be “made available online for research,” the organization said.
The Arkansas State Archives partnered with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History for the project, which will take two years, according to the Facebook post.
“I am delighted that the NEH selected the Arkansas State Archives’ grant application for an award,” Arkansas State Archives Director Lisa Speer said in the post. “Arkansas is one of a handful of states not participating in the NDNP. This grant and collaboration with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History will benefit scholarship on our state by providing convenient access to a large body of public domain Arkansas newspapers. I’m very grateful to the MDAH for their willingness to share their expertise to help us achieve this goal.”
The public will be able to access the pages for free. Information on which Arkansas newspapers would be put online was not yet available.
