“Traveling from Appalachia to the Arkansas Delta was a shock to me. I thought I was prepared to see poverty – heck, I’ve been seeing poverty this whole year of travel with Heifer – but there was something about the sheer desolation of the town of Hughes, Arkansas, that just about broke my heart.” ~ Betty Londergan.

Arkansas was one of six states that the U.S. Census reports with the highest rates of poverty, according to its 2002015 American Community Survey, which it released Thursday. The other five states are Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and New Mexico. Arkansas slipped to No. 49 on the median-income list, David Smith reports at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
