The Arkansas Press Association (APA) will host its third annual Press Freedom Gala on Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Clinton Presidential Center’s Great Hall. The event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and an awards ceremony at 7 p.m.
This year, the APA will recognize several distinguished individuals and organizations for their contributions to the state and the press.
Arkansas Foodbank Named APA Headliner of the Year
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Arkansas Foodbank has been named the APA’s Headliner of the Year. As the state’s largest hunger relief organization, it serves 33 counties in central, eastern, and southern Arkansas. The Foodbank’s key initiatives, such as Food For Kids, Food For Families and Food For Seniors, have enabled it to distribute more than 40 million pounds of food annually through a network of over 400 partner agencies. Despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Arkansas Foodbank continues to provide essential resources to families in need, ensuring consistent access to nutritious food across the state.
James L. “Skip” Rutherford III to Receive APA Distinguished Service Award
James L. “Skip” Rutherford III, Dean Emeritus of the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, will be honored with the APA Distinguished Service Award. A long-time advocate for the Arkansas newspaper industry, Rutherford has served on the Arkansas Newspaper Foundation board since 2022 and has been an active supporter of press freedom initiatives. His distinguished career includes contributions to journalism, education, and public service, with previous recognition as APA’s Headliner of the Year and numerous accolades for his role in planning and opening the Clinton Presidential Center.
Larry Foley Named APA Journalism Educator of the Year
Larry Foley, a professor at the University of Arkansas School of Journalism and Strategic Media, will be awarded the APA Journalism Educator of the Year. Foley, who joined the faculty in 1993 after a successful career in television, has made significant contributions to journalism education. During his tenure as chair from 2014 to 2023, the school saw record growth and a substantial investment in new facilities. Foley’s documentary films have earned multiple Mid-America Emmy Awards, further solidifying his legacy as a storyteller and educator.
“The Press Freedom Gala is a celebration of both a free press and of those who brought positive headlines to Arkansas,” said APA Executive Director Ashley Kemp Wimberley. “We are honored to recognize this year’s honorees and draw attention to their service to our state and to the Arkansas newspaper industry.”
The Press Freedom Gala continues to be a significant event for the APA, highlighting the critical role of journalism in the state and the individuals who contribute to its success.
