CEO, claimSTAT Medical
Bethany Abbott spent years learning the endless intricacies of payer systems, reimbursement and healthcare operations. She developed a wide knowledge of medical billing, compliance, appeals, revenue recovery and operational strategy, all the while gaining invaluable perspective from deep within the machinery of the industry. None of the myriad small details, however, were the point. People were.
“My career has always been driven by one simple goal: solving problems that prevent providers from delivering care and patients from receiving it,” Abbott said.
One of those problems loomed larger than the rest. Abbott saw firsthand the particular struggles dentists were having with insurance billing, reimbursement and payer policies. Her domain expertise allowed her to quickly spot a gap in support that was keeping dental practices from being fairly reimbursed for medically necessary care. That, Abbott said, is where she found her niche and, ultimately, discovered her calling.
“Proper billing is about helping practices remain financially healthy so they can continue serving their communities,” she said. “As my experience grew, so did my passion for helping providers navigate increasingly complex reimbursement challenges.”
Abbott responded to the need by founding claimSTAT Medical, a company helping providers nationwide maximize reimbursements, improve operational efficiency and focus on patient care rather than administrative hurdles. The result has been a scalable, sustainable billing model for dental providers, widely believed impossible before. Proving not only to herself but to an entire profession that it could be done, Abbott said, has been a high-water mark in her career.
“Every time we help a practice recover revenue, successfully navigate a complex payer issue or give providers the confidence to offer medically necessary care without worrying about reimbursement, it reinforces why I do what I do,” Abbott said. “Knowing we’ve helped practices thrive while improving access to patient care is incredibly fulfilling.”
The roots of Abbott’s drive to help others go back to her mother, who she described as “one of the most talented and capable people I’ve ever known.” From playing piano to around-the-house plumbing, she seemed to never meet an obstacle she could not face nor a skill she could not acquire. Personal circumstances and a deep sense of responsibility kept Abbott’s mother working on the family farm, where she spent decades putting the needs of others first at the expense of her own aspirations.
“Watching her make those sacrifices changed me,” Abbott said. “In many ways, I feel like I am living not only for my own dreams but for hers, as well. Every opportunity I’ve had, every risk I’ve taken and every milestone I’ve reached carries a piece of her with me.”
While she is hard at work transforming the healthcare and insurance industries and leaving them both for the better, Abbott’s proudest accomplishment is something much closer to home, perhaps not unlike her own mother: raising up the next generation. Watching her son, Mason, “grow into an intelligent, kind, hardworking and grounded young man” is something Abbott said she cherishes more than any professional plaudits.
