Across the United States, women are proving themselves to be powerhouses as they step over broken rungs and smash through glass ceilings on the path to success. In an article last year titled “Is This the Age of Women in Leadership?” Forbes reported that while only three large public companies in the U.S. were led by women in 1999, there were 10.1 million firms owned by women in 2008.
When women come into power at the office, companies gain power, as well. As Forbes reported, companies with female executives are 30 percent more likely to perform better than other companies; the most profitable Fortune 500 companies had the highest proportion of female directors; and promoting and retaining women increases a company’s chances of tapping into women’s consumer spending power — which Forbes reported is estimated to be $20 trillion globally.
Girl Power Marketing estimates that figure to be even higher at more than $31.8 trillion. The organization states that the purchasing power of U.S. women ranges between $5 trillion and $15 trillion each year. More than 60 percent of all personal wealth in the county is controlled by women, and although women make up a little more than half the population, they control or influence 85 percent of consumer spending.
More than the dollar impact of women in society, however, it is important to recognize the power women have to drive innovation through entrepreneurship, mend lives through philanthropic work and carve a path forward through public service. It is important to recognize the power women have in the home, where they are parents, caregivers and role models.

Laura Abbott became a grassroots victims’ rights ambassador after surviving a near-fatal violent crime. She helped develop Laura’s Card, Arkansas’ victims’ rights card, and founded Victims’ Rights Arkansas, a grassroots organization educating the public on the need for enforceable victims’ rights at the state and federal level. Since 2015, she has partnered with survivors and lawmakers to advance policy and serves on gubernatorial-appointed boards, including the Arkansas Commission on Child Abuse, Rape and Domestic Violence, the Arkansas Suicide Prevention Council, and the Arkansas Crime Victims’ Reparation Board. She has also served on the boards of National Organization for Victim Advocacy and the National Crime Victim Law Institute. Recognized for her impact, Abbott has received awards, including Arkansas Health Educator of the Year in 2014, the Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime National Crime Victims’ Service Volunteer Award in 2019 and the John W.
